Kyocera Document Solutions SA is pleased to announce the national finalists for its 2021 Service Awards, an exciting annual event which recognises the company’s best service engineers across the globe. Many international service engineers qualify for entry each year and this year saw 121 entries from SA-based engineers, who completed the online exam portion of the competition. And the finalists are … Top Service Dealers Top 10 Finalists for 2021 Steven Bosch, Lesedi ICT Marchant Combrink, Office-Cor Ezray Cupido, Nasatech Michail Eksteen, Universal Office Automative Solutions Jacques Lombard, Ronmar Office Equipment Calvin Malekela, Corporate Business Solutions Robert Nkosi, Pansolutions Danushan Pillay, Omni Technologies Rayno Strydom, Kokstad Copiers Matthew Townsend, NRG Office Solutions
The finalists will go on to compete in the 2021 Service Awards national finals, which includes practical and theoretical components, and stand to win R55 000 in cash prizes, gift bags and certificates. The finals will be held at KDZA’s head office in Johannesburg from 7 to 9 September 2021. Because safety is of utmost importance to us and we adhere to all COVID-19 health and safety protocols, the KDZA team will only test five finalists a day and unfortunately prize giving will not form part of the finals this year. Instead, winners will be invited to attend a small event hosted by KDZA to celebrate their achievements and the winner will go on to compete in the European Finals to find the Best Engineer in the Region. Usually the winner of the national awards travels overseas to compete against other EMEA regional KYOCERA winners and the prize for the top achievers of the regional finals usually win an all-expenses paid trip to Japan, however, due to COVID-19 this may not be an option. The format of the finals is being discussed and will be announced in due course. As KDZA’s local Service Awards 2020 finals were not held last year due to safety concerns for the delegates, the Top 5 for 2020 automatically qualify into this year’s finals and they are: Tjaart Bekker, URB ICT Alan Benefeld, Page Automation Juandre Broodryk, Universal Office Automative Solutions Thamsanqa Nxumalo, Corporate Business Solutions Darryl van der Mescht, NRG Office Solutions
KYOCERA service partners provide the backbone of service delivery across our region and we remain focused on continually improving our local service network together with our partners, and providing a certification framework to develop the skills of our service engineers.
These awards are important, as they not only reward the efforts of our technicians, but they give us a chance to prove how rigorously-trained our technicians are, which is a competitive advantage for us. It is an important differentiator that our technicians can service and repair machinery that provides many years of satisfactory use for a business, and we are exceptionally proud of both participants and finalists. | Kyocera Ecosys M6235cidn review: Worth splashing out (UK) Busy workgroups looking for a workhorse laser MFP need look no further. Kyocera’s Ecosys M6235cidn is designed for huge duty cycles, with a quoted maximum of 100,000 pages a month. It’s cost-effective, too. The ceramic print drum and developer are designed to last the life of the MFP, so toner is the only consumable. You’ll find 6,000-page black and 5,000-page colour cartridges supplied in the box, after which Kyocera’s high-capacity black toner cartridges last 13,000 pages, while colour ones are good for 11,000 pages. That works out to a very reasonable 1p per mono page and 5.4p for colour. The M6235cidn is a versatile creature, thanks to Kyocera’s HyPAS (Hybrid Platform for Advanced Solutions) app library. There’s a good range to choose from, including apps for access control and document management. Sadly, due to changes in security policies, some cloud apps are being discontinued, including Cloud Direct for Dropbox and Google Drive, so this might not be the ideal MFP for teams that are heavily invested in the cloud. |

| Kyocera study: Office is often overlooked in sustainability strategies (Germany) A third of the companies in Germany do not have a sustainability strategy for their office processes. This is the result of a survey that Statista carried out on behalf of Kyocera Document Solutions Germany.
Since around 18 million people work in an office in Germany, there is great potential here to improve one's own climate balance, according to Kyocera. Companies that pursue a green office strategy implement measures relating to printing and digitization: 59 percent of those surveyed stated that they would digitize paper-intensive processes 39 percent also rely on raising employee awareness and in In 38 percent of cases, there are fixed rules when printing out documents, such as duplex printing, i.e. printing on both sides of the paper.

| What is the printer's role in the WFH era? (SA) To borrow Mark Twain's famous saying, the death of print has been greatly exaggerated. It's a headline that appears on many articles discussing the topic. The idea of digital media eliminating printing has turned out to be simplistic. On a philosophical level, people are even more attracted to tangible media, counteracting digital media's ethereal character. For example, US book publishers made $26 billion in revenue during 2019, $22.6 billion of which came from printed books. The recent shifts in workplace behaviours have lifted printing's appeal even further. According to David Preston, MD of Canon South Africa, the shift to remote and hybrid working is boosting a market that was already doing well: "In the one month of June, we sold more printers than in any other single month of the previous 12-month period, and those numbers were already strong. Something's going on there." What could that be? The answer lies in how printers have developed in three notable areas. First, they have evolved into centralised devices that various people can access. Second, printers are now multifunction devices that offer scanning and related technologies such as OCR (optical character recognition) to digitise physical documents quickly. Third, they integrate more seamlessly with broader technology ecosystems, such as a company IT environment or access to cloud services and storage. The printer's expanding role Visibility unlocks productivity |

| eBook: How digitisation is giving SMBs a competitive edge (SA)
It’s a fundamental shift that’s changing how organisations operate internally and interact with their customers, suppliers and partners. Converting paper processes to digital ones helps them cut costs, increase efficiency and deliver better customer service. And we’re not talking here about basic digitisation, where you simply scan original paper documents and store them. The real gains come when you deploy an end-to-end digital ecosystem, with complex document workflows reduced to push-button simplicity. Where document routing, storage, sharing and security are effortlessly integrated and automated. |

| PrintNightmare: More attacks on corporate networks predicted (SA) June 2021, researchers inadvertently published a proof of concept (PoC) exploit for a critical Windows Print Spooler vulnerability, dubbed PrintNightmare that enables users to gain access to corporate networks.
Although a patch for the vulnerability has been released, the vast majority of users have not downloaded or installed it yet, and while the exploit was quickly taken off GitHub, some managed to download and republish it. Evgeny Lopatin, security expert at Kaspersky, says the vulnerability is serious because it enables bad actors to gain access to other computers within an organisation's network. “Since the exploit is publicly available, a lot of fraudsters will take advantage of it. Therefore, we urge all users to apply the latest security updates for Windows,” he adds. He says PrintNightmare can be used by attackers with a regular user account, to take control of vulnerable servers or client machines that run the Windows Print Spooler service. |

| Remote Work Highlights the Real Problems with Paper-Based Processes (SA) Despite the rapid move towards remote work during the pandemic, even COVID-19 hasn’t been able to kill off paper in the enterprise. The result is that most businesses are facing the twin challenges of ensuring that remote employees manage hardcopy documents with due regard for security and making it easy for them to share documents with each other in remote or hybrid working environments. Despite years of hype about the paperless office, paper has endured because there are still many business processes that depend on paper being signed and scanned to comply with legislation. What’s more, most businesses also have many important corporate records stored in legacy media or in unstructured formats such as paper files, books, magazines, films, and microfiche. “To address this challenge, companies will need to invest in the holistic management of their information. They will need to analyse their legacy business processes and technology infrastructure to determine where the potential risks and inefficiencies lie. This is the perfect opportunity for digital transformation of your business to ensure that you are not left behind in the electronic age.” |

How to connect your smartphone to a printer (Australia)
Before you get started, you need to connect your printer to your home network. However, every brand does this a little differently. Even within the same brand, the way you get the ball rolling changes from product to product. The best advice is to consult your printer's product or user manual. If you can't find yours, try searching for it online using the exact product name, which should be somewhere on the printer, either on the case or on a sticker. Only download user manuals from the manufacturer's website. Once your printer is online, you can connect your Android or iOS devices using the following steps |
